A Modern Quilt Project

Dear Thoroughly Modern Millies,

We hope you are getting excited about our upcoming SewEasy!  We are clandestinely planning a roaring celebration!  We hope you have all received your invitations in the mail. (Yes, it is okay to run check your mailbox RIGHT NOW.)  Be sure to return your RSVP and clams to Kaitlin so you can receive the password and super secret location details of the SewEasy.

Here are a few top secret details about our project,,,

Based upon the initial survey, we are planning for about 20 participants this year. We will be sewing a group project that will involve each dame sewing twenty blocks of the same design that will then be traded with all the other dolls at the retreat.

[There are a few people who will not be able to attend, but who wanted to participate in the project anyway. (If you are one of these people you should have received the pattern for your block in your invitation. Please complete your blocks and be sure to make arrangements to get them to quilt retreat, or mail them to April by April 1st.)  After quilt retreat, we will send you a packet with all the other blocks and the fabric to complete your project. Don't forget to send your $15 for the extra fabric.]

It's the roaring twentieth anniversary of quilt retreat!  In keeping with the theme of the first modern decade, we will be exploring MODERN QUILTING.  Modern quilting tends to say “less is more”—less cutting, less sewing, less complication, less stress.  We agree with this philosophy at this stage in our lives, so we have simplified the fabric requirements for this project.  Many of you have probably noticed the cute bundles of cut and packaged fabric in your neighborhood fabric store.  This seems to be the modern way to easily purchase fabric—no difficult decisions about color, contrast or style—the decision is made for you.  Just pick up ONE JELLY ROLL of your choosing.  So easy!  (See...it really is a SewEasy!)  It can be any color, any style, print or solid.  Just choose something you will love, and we will love it too.

If you find yourself wanting to go the “old-fashioned” way, just bring two strips (2.5” x 44”) of 22 different fabrics that coordinate with one another.  We will be completing our quilts with white and gray solid fabrics that will be provided for you at the retreat.

[For those of you completing your blocks on your own, we need to clarify a couple of things when sewing using jelly rolls.  The fabric strips are cut with a “pinked edge.”  When sewing, please align your presser foot with the INSIDE edge of the pinking.  And when putting the straight edge of a piece against a pinked edge, put the straight edge on the inside edge of the pinking.  (To clarify, if you measure the fabric strips in a jelly roll you will find that they are 2.5 inches from the inside of one pinked edge to the inside of the other pinked edge.)  Your blocks should be 8.5 inches square when they are finished.  We suggest you make one block and measure it before cutting and sewing the fabric for the other nineteen blocks.  Also, keep in mind that because you only have two strips of any one color in your jelly roll, not all of your blocks will look the same. In fact, they can all be different.  Creatively use different combinations of fabrics to complete twenty blocks using the same pattern you were given.  This is one aspect of the project that will make each quilt unique.]

If you have any questions about buying fabric or completing your blocks, please contact Susan at susan@quma.net or you can leave a comment below.

Now you're on the trolley!
